English Program:
English is a regular program of Prime University designed according to the needs of present time. English is no longer a subject only it becomes the main technology of communication. For that innovative curriculum of these programs are based upon a compelling philosophy of teaching that allows students to achieve an excellence of performance.
Mission:
The mission is to achieve the goals of higher education and to serve the country. As the basic need for a country to develop is to communicate through the whole world and here the importance of learning English comes. At the time of globalization, no effective communication is possible without English. So the courses mission is to achieve every success.
Objective:
The Master of Arts in English is a comprehensive one whose purpose is to expand student’s intellectual horizons and offer language & Literature proficiency skills that enhance career choices. It is designed to ensure a range of study in the major areas of English (Literature, Language and TESOL) .
Length of the Program:
Students will be complete their MA degree within two years. Students who have done their four-year BA (Hons.) will enroll for one year MA in English either in Literature or in Language.
Program Summaries:
For two year MA:
English two year MA program consists of 6 Semester; 3 semester per academic year. The academic semester starts in January, May and September each year. Each semester consists of 15 week class teaching, 1 week for preparatory level and 1 week for examination. The whole program is a program of 60 credits.
Students with 4-years honors in English may choose either TESOL or Literature stream. If the choice is TESOL he/she is to take the courses of second year TESOL (ENG-601-601) see page 8. If the choice is Literature stream then he/she is to take (ENG-701-711)
Program Structure and Duration:
a) The academic year of the Department of English is divided into three Semesters as follows:

Course Load:
The Students are to take the course load by as fixed by the University authority as shown in the detailed description of courses (MA in English). On special circumstances, maximum one course of the forthcoming semester will be allowed with the permission of the University authority. The University authority will exercise this power in case of the students coming through credit transfer.
Admission Board:
The Vice Chancellor of the University will constitute on Admission Board for the Program under the Chairmanship of the Concerned Dean/Head or a Senior Faculty member of the academic staff appointed by the former for a period of two years Department of Englsih.
The Admission Board shall perform the functions noted below:
a) To scrutinize applications received by the admission office of the University and prepare a list of names of the candidates who meet the minimum academic requirements, qualifications, etc. for admission.
b) To set question papers, arrange admission tests and arrange evaluation of answer scripts for each test.
c) To prepare and publish lists of the successful candidates for admission into the University in order of merit after approved of the respective Dean/Chairman.
d) To study credit transfer case and make appropriate recommendations in such case in accordance with relevant rules and regulations of the University.
Admission Procedure:
a) General Information:
Admission process MA in English will begin in January, May and September every year. Interested students are required to apply for admission in prescribed forms available in the Registrar office on payment (non-refundable) of 250/- Tk. fee. The application forms duly filled in with three passport size photographs are to submitted to the Admission office/Head of the respective departments for processing.
Applicants have to produce documents as proof of their qualifications, date of birth, nationality mark certificates of the SSC, HSC or equivalent, attested by a first class gazette officer or equivalent.
b) Admission test:
The Chairman of the respective department with the assistance of his colleagues of admission board will scrutinize the application form written admission test. The successful candidates in written admission test will be required to appear for oral test for the final selection.
Examination System:
a) Two mid-term examinations & two class test examination shall be held within each semester after the end of certain port of their syllabus.
b) The Final Examination of the English (MA) students shall be held after the end of 16th weeks of each semester.
Academic Standard:
The students are to take the requisite number of courses and maintain satisfactory grades in the courses. In particular, the students are expected to maintain a GPA of 2 (both cumulative and that in the semester), otherwise the student will be put on probation for the following semester. If the student fails to maintain a GPA of 2 in the following semester, then the University will review the students record and recommend further action which may include options such as changing course of study, taking extra courses or in some cases, even withdrawing from the University.
Re-admission:
a) A student getting GPA below 2 in each academic year may seek readmission with the next batch. For readmission, a student will have to apply within 15 days of the announcement of the result of the concerned year.
b) On readmission, grade earned earlier by a student in the class year of readmission shall case to exist and the student shall have to retake all the courses and examinations. Readmission shall be allowed only once in a class year. A student shall not be allowed readmission in more than two class years during the entire program. A class year a defined as three consecutive semester.
Class Attendance:
Students class attendance is regarded as an essential part of the course requirement. The expected class attendance is 90 percent. However a student shall not be allowed to sit for the examinations if his/her class attendance is below 70 percent for per semester.
Faculty Members:
The English MA program courses will be taught by competent teachers and also by highly qualified visiting professors from home and abroad.
